Some songs just demand that you dance. Or, at the very least, shake your shoulders and tap your toes. Today’s Song of the Day, Little Scream – Love as a Weapon, is most definitely one of them.

Premiering earlier this year, the song was the first track released from the LP, Cult Following, which was Little Scream’s second – but first with new labels Merge Records (US) and Dine Alone Records (Canada). The album comes from the cult-like experiences that were encountered by Laurel Sprengelmeyer – the multi-instrumental musician better known as, Little Scream – during her early years in Brazil and other locations after being raised as a Jehova’s Witness. Speaking with Andrea Warner of Exclaim, Sprengelmeyer added that this album was also her attempt at making Purple Rain if “it was done by a Midwestern girl with more of a folk upbringing.”

When asked about Love as a Weapon, in particular, Sprengelmeyer said, through her label Merge Records’ website, “I was thinking of classic pop songs, how a good one can lift you out of a fog like nothing else. This is a song of rebellious joy, for dancing and crying and starting over, again and again.” With influences other than folk such as dance, indie, and other rock beats belting out on Love as a Weapon, it’s easy to see why artists like Sharon Van Etten, Sufjan Stevens, and members of The National, Thee Silver Mt. Zion, and Arcade Fire have wanted to work with her and utilize her unique talent.

If you had a chance to catch the talent of Little Scream at WayHome – I’m still kicking myself for missing that set – or, at any other one of her live shows, you must be considering yourself pretty lucky, as her performances have been known to be incredible. But, if you missed out like me, or, just need to be introduced to her, please enjoy our Song of the Day, Little Scream – Love as a Weapon, and follow Little Scream on Instagram below.
